Cornwall, St James, Rusea’s book spot to next round
GREEN POND, St James — Three former champions Cornwall College, St James High and Rusea’s High all booked their places in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition with comfortable wins in yesterday’s return-round games.
Four schools have now booked their spots in the next round after Glenmuir High advanced on Wednesday, but Port Antonio High’s march to the next round was slowed after they were upset 0-1 by Fair Prospect — their first loss in six games this season.
Cornwall College matched their largest win over Green Pond with a 5-0 scoreline at Green Pond to improve to 11 points, one more than St James High, who blanked Irwin High 3-0 to wrap up both places from Zone A and set up a winner-takes-all clash tomorrow.
It was the second time Cornwall College were beating Green Pond 5-0 — the last time in 2008; they also had a 4-0 victory in 2010 — as Peter-Lee Vassell and Alrick Ottey gave the former champions a 2-0 lead at half-time.
Jourdaine Fletcher scored with a free-kick early in the second half, while Kymanie Russell and Leonardo Murray added goals later.
At Irwin, St James High, who have played a game less than Cornwall, stayed in touch, beating the home team 3-0 after a 4-0 first-round victory.
Rusea’s High made it four straight wins in Zone B, beating Green Island High 3-0 in Lucea to move to 12 points and ensure their progress.
Frome Technical blanked Merlene Ottey High 2-0 at Pond Side, Hanover to join Green Pond High on seven points, but with a game in hand.
Odane Bryan scored in the 39th minute for Fair Prospect as they snapped Port Antonio’s perfect winning run at five games and slowed their rush for the Inter-zone round.
The win by Fair Prospect avenged their first-round loss as they moved to 10 points and stayed in second place in Zone L as Titchfield High beat Happy Grove 2-1 to jump one place into third spot on seven points.
After being beaten 6-1 in the first round, Edwin Allen High gained a measure of revenge by holding defending champions Clarendon College to a 0-0 draw in their Zone H game in Frankfield.
In the competitive Zone G that looks likely to go down to the last whistle, Holmwood Technical and Spalding High are joint leaders on 10 points each after yesterday’s games.
Holmwood beat Bellefield High 3-0, while Spalding were held 2-2 by Alston who are on eight points.
