MBU striker leads team to 4-0 spanking of Cavalier
TUCKER, St James — In-form striker Dino Williams scored his second brace in four days in the Red Stripe Premier League to lead Montego Bay United to an easy 4-0 win over Cavalier SC in their rescheduled game played yesterday on the newly relaid WesPow Park in Tucker, St James.
It was the third straight win for Montego Bay United, who also had goals from Owayne Gordon and Jermaine Woozencroft, as they climbed into joint second place with Portmore United, both on nine points, one behind FC Reno, who are on 10 points.
It was the first loss of the season for Cavalier SC, who up to then had not conceded a goal in three games, and the Kingston team played most of the game with 10 men after central defender Jeffrey Grant was sent off in the eighth minute after he was adjudged to have denied the home team a goal by deliberately handling the ball inside the box.
Williams has scored six goals in his last three games, including their 3-3 draw against DC United in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League a week ago, and against Boys’ Town. Head Coach Timothy Hankinson said it was the team’s best showing so far.
“Yes, it was the best overall performance from start to finish,” Hankinson said grudgingly, but admitted that the “game changed right at the start with the red card”. He added that Cavalier “did very well early on to keep the game within reach”.
Hankinson told the Jamaica Observer the game changed when their wingers’ Gordon and Woozencroft got into the action. “When you can play the wingers game against a team down to 10 men things are going to open up for you.”
He also admitted the game got “easy” in the second half when they made changes in the midfield and defence. “The game started to relax from our standpoint as it was out of reach for Cavalier.”
That the American said is not necessarily a good thing. “We have to address that as we want to continue to play at the highest standard, not just for our discipline, but also for the fans.”
Cavalier’s Rudolph Speid had very little to say, though admitting that the early red card was “the turning point as after that we were always chasing the game”.
The teams had hardly settled down before Grant handled a powerful shot from Donovan Carey in a crowded six-yard box, and after the big central defender was sent off, Williams powered home the spot kick in the ninth minute.
Cavalier could have drawn level two minutes later, but Dawayne Smith’s low hard shot from the right wing beat goalkeeper Jacomeno Barrett, but also missed the far post by inches.
Cavalier’s goalkeeper Carlloyd Walters did well to stop another vicious shot from Carey at his near left post, but had no answer to the best goal of the game in the 40th minute.
Williams picked out Gordon with a peach of a cross from the right wing and the striker met it with a wonderful volley as the ball flew past the diving Walters into the far right corner of the goal.
Woozencroft made it 3-0 in the 56th minute with his second goal of the season, when he blasted home from close range when the Cavalier defence failed to clear a corner.
Williams got his second in the 71st minute when he beat Walters from just outside the 18-yard box and then hit the bar twice in his quest for a third goal.
Al Nesbeth came closest to scoring for Cavalier, but his thunderous shot came back off the crossbar in the 85th minute before Barrett even reacted.
