Glenmuir first to qualify for Inter-zone round
PORUS, Manchester — Former champions Glenmuir High are the first qualifiers for the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition after a 5-0 romp over Porus High in their Zone M game played at the Porus Community Centre.
Jevaun Ennis scored a three-timer, his first strikes of the season to lead the Patrick ‘Jackie’ Walters-coached team to their third win, while Kevon Lambert got his fourth and Ornando Collins got the other.
Glenmuir High are now on 10 points and with Denbigh High beating Garvey Maceo High 1-0 in the other game, they cannot finish lower than second in the zone.
Meanwhile, despite a 9-3 drubbing of Belair, Zone F leaders Manchester High, as well as Vere Technical High, must wait until Saturday to clinch their place in the next round.
Romario Walsh scored four times to take his tally to 12 goals to lead Manchester High to their seventh straight win as they conceded goals for the first time this season, while Duhaney Williams also scored two goals.
Vere Technical needed a win to secure their place from Zone N but were held 1-1 by Old Harbour and must also wait until Saturday to secure their place in the next round.
Munro College are the leaders in the competitive Zone E for the first time this season after a 4-0 win over BB Coke took them level with Lacovia High on 13 points each.
Lacovia snapped a two-game winless run to beat Newell 2-0, as St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) drew with Maggotty, resulting in both teams locked on 12 points each in third and fourth places, respectively.
Three more schools, including former winners Cornwall College and Rusea’s High, could book their berths in the 32-team Inter-zone round when the competition continues this afternoon with 13 games.
Both Cornwall College in Zone A and Port Antonio High in Zone L need to avoid defeat to secure their spots, while Rusea’s High must win in Zone B today to book an early spot.
Port Antonio, semi-finalists in 2013, are perfect through their first five games and a draw today would be enough for them to return to the Inter-zone after missing out last year. They had won their first-round game 1-0 and will have an edge playing at home.
Fair Prospect are on a roll, however, winning their last two games and remaining unbeaten in three after losing their first two games and would give their chances a massive boost with a win today.
Cornwall College and Green Pond are coming off wins over Irwin High — Cornwall winning 6-0 with a three-timer from Jourdaine Fletcher on Tuesday, and Green Pond winning 5-1 on Saturday with a three-timer from Peter Campbell.
Cornwall College have not lost in 12 straight games in Zone A, but Green Pond were the last team to beat them, in the return round of the 2013 season.
The teams drew 1-1 in the first round where Cornwall played without three regular starters and went a man down midway the second half, but anything than a win today for Green Pond could see their season ending after the first round.
Rusea’s High are perfect through three games after having their 11-1 victory over Cambridge High declared null and void after the south St James school withdrew on Monday, but will be confident against Green Island at home.
Ten-time champions Rusea’s escaped with a 1-0 win in their opening game against Green Island and will be expecting another tough fight against a team that will have Inter-zone ambitions as well.
Defending champions Clarendon College could draw to within touching distance of a place in the Inter-zone round with a win over Edwin Allen in Zone H.
The free-scoring Clarendon College team, who have scored 29 goals, beat Edwin Allen 6-1 in their opening game and are coming off a 13-1 drenching of Kellits on Tuesday.
They lead Zone H with 13 points and three more today would see them a win away with two games to go.
