Cornwall, Rusea’s can secure Inter-Zone position today
CORNWALL College and Rusea’s High, the two most successful schools in the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup football competition, could secure Inter-Zone spots after this afternoon’s return-round of matches.
Cornwall College, which won the last of their 11 titles in 2001, can advance with a draw against Green Pond in the Zone A game at Green Pond.
Ten-time champions Rusea’s High, which won all three games so far in Zone B and are on nine points, can also qualify with a fourth win when they take on Green Island High at the Colin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea.
Rusea’s High escaped with a 1-0 win over Green Pond in their first clash, a game that was badly affected by rain. Another win today would ensure they cannot finish lower than second place.
Green Island beat Rusea’s in their return-round game last year, to slow down the former champions, and will have their hopes high today that they can pull off another shocker and take over the lead with 10 points.
Also today, Frome Technical, last year’s Zone B winners, will seek to improve their points and goals tally when they host Merlene Ottey High at the Frome Sports Complex.
The withdrawal of Cambridge High on Tuesday saw three Zone B schools including Rusea’s and Frome Technical lose points from wins they had earned in the first round.
Rusea’s had beaten Cambridge 11-1 in southern St James, but the win has been wiped clean from the records.
At Green Pond, Cornwall College need only to avoid a loss to advance to the Inter-zone as they lead with eight points from four games, one point more than St James High, which have played a game less and would only need a point from their next two games if Cornwall should win today.
St James and Cornwall will meet on Saturday at Jarrett Park in a game that could decide the zone winners.
Green Pond are the last team to beat Cornwall College in Zone A, in the return-round in the 2013 season, and since then the 11-time champions have gone 12 games without a loss.
In the first round, Green Pond came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against Cornwall College at Jarrett Park — and after beating Irwin High 5-1 on Saturday, will be confident of taking three points from the zone leaders.
Cornwall College are coming off a 6-0 win over Irwin on Tuesday, when Jourdaine Fletcher scored his second hat-trick of the season, while Alrick Ottey got two goals.
Despite looking flat and uninspired, Cornwall led 2-0 at the break, both goals coming from Ottey before dominating the second half with four more goals as they got ready for today’s showdown.
