Clarendon College rampage
CHAPELTON, Clarendon — Defending champions Clarendon College went on a goal-scoring spree yesterday, beating hapless Kellits High 13-0 in their ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup return-round Zone H game in Chapelton.
Former national Under-17 player Seigel Knight led the onslaught with four goals, Jermaine Clarke three, while Greggton Charlton got two for the Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-coached team to improve to 13 points with their fourth win from five games.
The 13 goals scored was the highest by any team so far this season, more than the nine scored by Manchester High against Belair in a Zone F game.
Rusea’s had scored 11 against Cambridge High, who have since withdrawn and the scores were made null and void by ISSA.
Also in Zone H, Lennon High edged Thompson Town 1-0 to leapfrog Edwin Allen back into second place on 10 points.
Port Antonio High extended their winning run in Zone L to five games with a 3-0 win over Buff Bay High at Lynch Park and moved to 15 points.
Fair Prospect took over second place with their 2-1 win over Happy Grove to avenge their first-round loss.
At Jarrett Park, Jourdaine Fletcher scored his second hat-trick of the season, both against Irwin High as Cornwall College rolled to a 6-0 win and retook the lead in Zone A.
Fletcher’s three goals came in the second half after Alrick Ottey had given Cornwall College a 2-0 lead at half-time, while Peter-Lee Vassell, who hit the underside of the Irwin cross bar three times in the game, added the sixth from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game.
Today, Manchester High will seek to win their seventh straight game in Zone F and move to within touching distance of confirming their place in the Inter-zone round when they visit winless Belair High. Manchester High had won their first-round game 9-0 and another win today would see them improve to 21 points with Mile Gully on 13 points and DeCarteret on 12, both set to battle for the runner-up spot when they clash today.
Mile Gully had won the first-round game 1-0, and another win today, would give them the needed cushion in second place.
In Zone E, former champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Munro College will both hope to extend their winning runs after slow starts.
STETHS are joint leaders with 11 points with BB Coke and have won their last two games with a 10-0 aggregate, while Munro College have won three to be tied for second place on 10 points.
STETHS will seek their first win over Maggotty High this season, after they were held 1-1 at home in their opening game, and hope their free-scoring ways will continue.
Despite winning their last three games, Munro have only scored four goals and will face BB Coke, who have only conceded three goals so far this season and drew 0-0 with Munro in the first round.
Lacovia High, meanwhile, will hope to stop a two-game losing run when they face last-placed Newell High and three points would put them squarely back in the race for the Inter-zone.
In Zone K, Bog Walk and Ewarton, tied on 12 points each, will meet in a game that could decide who will accompany leaders Dinthill Technical to the next round. Ewarton had won the first round game, but trail Bog Walk on goal difference.
