STETHS coach rejects ‘rebuilding’ tag
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Challenging for major honours remains the ultimate ambition for St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) despite their slow start to the season, coach Omar Wedderburn has said.
The reigning Ben Francis Cup champions began their daCosta Cup campaign with a series
of inconsistent performances in Zone E — earning five points from their first four games — but have seemingly turned the corner with a big 6-0 victory over Newell High on Thursday.
STETHS now sit third in the group on eight points but could leapfrog joint leaders Lacovia High and BB Coke, both on 10 points, should they beat Lacovia in Santa Cruz on Saturday.
“Our aim is always to win,” said Wedderburn, “and that is why the supporters feel so frustrated at the moment. They get used to us winning and scoring a lot of goals so they expect us to do it every time.”
“Yes,” added, “we are going through a rough patch. But the objective is the same: we want to top the zone and win trophies.”
And even though many observers consider his STETHS team a huge downgrade from previous seasons, Wedderburn refused to label their campaign with the ‘rebuilding’ tag.
He said: “No, I wouldn’t say we are rebuilding because we retained quite a few players; they just weren’t regular starters.”
