‘We need to improve if we hope to challenge for title,’ says Rivoli’s Thomas
DESPITE their 1-0 win over the University of the West Indies (UWI) Football Club on Sunday, Harold Thomas, head coach for Rivoli United FC, said that there is more work to be done if they want to challenge for the title in the Red Stripe Premier League season.
A 60th-minute strike from Cory Burke gave the Spanish Town-based Rivoli United their first home victory of the season, while it sank UWI to their third straight defeat since promoted to the top-flight league this season.
“The performance today (Sunday) wasn’t up to our standards. We should have been moving the ball around much easier, but that didn’t happen, hence we gave up too much possession of the ball throughout the first half,” Thomas told the Jamaica Observer.
“It is obvious that the team (Rivoli United) lacked fitness over the years and it showed today. We managed to do little work with that in a small space of time, but we still have a lot of things to work on if we want to post a challenge this season,” he added.
With the victory, Rivoli United moved to fifth position on four points behind leaders Portmore United FC (nine points), Arnett Garden FC (six points), Cavalier SC (four points) and Humble Lion FC (four points).
“We expected to win the match but not the way how it was achieved as there was too much heat between players on the field and too many mistakes. However, we are glad for the opportunity to get three points and we will continue to put in the work as we want to improve to get better as the league progresses,” Thomas said.
