Portmore march on
NEWLY promoted Portmore United checked Waterhouse from flowing with a determined come-from-behind 2-1 win at Drewsland on Sunday to keep their hundred per cent win record intact since returning to the Red Stripe Premier League.
Portmore United were posting their third consecutive win from as many matches. Waterhouse, on the other hand, were losing for the first time from two games.
Jermaine ‘Tuffy’ Anderson rose above the Portmore United defence in minute 26 to put Waterhouse ahead, but that was their only scoring success as Ricardo Morris took advantage of a suspect Waterhouse left side defence to send the teams to the break on par with a goal in the 35th minute.
On the stroke of half-time, Waterhouse were forced to make two critical defensive changes that weakened the team considerably after skipper Damarley Samuels and Oshane Roberts were replaced by DeAndre Brown and Rohan Amos. With the absence of skipper Samuels from the defence, Waterhouse became even more vulnerable at the back on the left, and what turned out to be Portmore United’s winning goal again came from that side, with the second-half substitute Maalique Foster dribbling through to beat goalkeeper Richard McCallum.
Continued early success for Portmore United has left the joint Head Coach Jeffrey Hewitt more than pleased with the “encouraging” result. “It was a good result for the team to come here to be a goal down and recover to win. It is the test of our team’s character and something that we have planned before that we are not just going to lie down and let any team run over us.
“From the pre-season, we told the players that it has to be the focus of the team to work extremely hard, stay disciplined, and maintain a high level of concentration throughout,” Hewitt added.
Calvert Fitzgerald was a picture of disappointment for not having capitalised on the chances that fell the way of Waterhouse to put them ahead of Portmore United before they got going in the latter stages of play.
“We got many chances to increase our lead, including a penalty, which we wasted. We played well for the most part, but failure to take the initiative in scoring goals ruined our chances of victory,” Fitzgerald lamented.
