Leaders Portmore face stern test at Drewsland
LEADERS Portmore United’s good early season form will be severely tested today when they travel to Waterhouse FC for a 4:00 pm game, hunting their third-consecutive win in the Red Stripe Premier League.
In the three other games on today, champions Arnett Gardens host Boys’ Town in a Trench Town derby at 6:00 pm; The University of the West Indies (UWI) travel to Rivoli United at 4:00 pm; and Tivoli Gardens entertain Humble Lion at 3:30 pm at the Edward Seaga Stadium.
With former champions Montego Bay United involved in CONCACAF Champions League action against DC United on Tuesday, their game against Cavalier has been postponed.
Then tomorrow, Harbour View will host FC Reno at the Compound starting at 8:30 pm.
Portmore, winners of the league on five occasions, the last being in 2012, a year before they were relegated from top-flight football, have returned with a bang, winning their first two games to be top of the league with six points.
The Geoffrey Hewitt-coached outfit turned back Montego Bay United 2-0 before clipping Rivoli United 1-0, and have attracted the attention of many despite being this early in the season.
This game against the ever-dangerous Waterhouse at Drewsland will be a good pointer as to the readiness of Portmore United as title challengers.
“Every game in the premier league will be tough opposition, and we just have to be consistent and try to get the results,” said Hewitt.
He continued: “We are cautiously optimistic about our chances. We have some quality players and each game we play we will get better.”
Meanwhile, champions Arnett Gardens will be aiming for a quick rebound in a difficult task against neighbours Boys’ Town in what is expected to be a hot Trench Town derby at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Arnett Gardens opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over UWI, but were outplayed in their 0-1 loss to Cavalier and could suffer yet another setback.
Boys’ Town are yet to win from two outings, but have played well enough to indicate that their first win of the season is not far away.
Last season’s semi-finalists Humble Lion are yet to register a win from two games and will be locked in a fierce fight with Tivoli Gardens.
Tivoli Gardens are in eighth place on two points and will have to do without Jermaine Johnson who is on red card suspension. However, the former champions will have enough firepower to make Humble Lion sweat, especially playing at home.
New boys, the University of the West Indies (UWI), are still hunting their first point when they tackle Rivoli United at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
Both teams are at the bottom of the league with Rivoli United on one point and UWI pointless, but that could change significantly for someone with the knowledge that a win could propel them to the top half of the table. It should set the stage for an intriguing encounter.
Former champions Harbour View, in seventh spot on two points, will host FC Reno, in fifth place on three points, in the Monday Night Football at the Compound starting at 8:30.
