Mile Gully, Manchester put perfect records on line today
MILE GULLY, Manchester — Mile Gully High and Manchester High will put their perfect win records to the test today when they meet in a Flow/ISSA daCosta Cup Zone F game at the Mile Gully Community Centre, starting at 3:30 pm.
The two, who are developing a heated rivalry in mid island, are among 11 schools that have won their first two games so far and both will hope to come out of this afternoon’s clash unscathed.
The other schools that have won their first two games so far are Tacky High, Islington High, defending champions Clarendon College, Frome Technical, Marcus Garvey, Dinthill Technical, Port Antonio High, Happy Grove and Vere Technical.
Thirty-five games are scheduled for today including games in Zones C and M where teams will make their seasonal debuts, one week after the start of the competition.
At the Mile Gully Community Centre, the home team will be seeking their first win over Manchester High and the first in their last eight meetings.
Mile Gully won the zone last year but Manchester High lost six points for using an ineligible player, including a game against Mile Gully, while the return-round game between the teams ended in a 0-0 draw.
In six meetings over the previous three seasons, Manchester High outscored Mile Gully 18-0 and will seek to continue their dominance this season.
Neither school has conceded a goal in their first two games and Manchester High are coming off a 9-0 thrashing of Belair on Wednesday.
Defending champions Clarendon College face probably their biggest test in Zone H today when they take on the Merron Gordon-coached Lennon High in their first game at home this season.
The Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-coached Clarendon College have scored 12 goals in their two games played with Joel Sterling leading with five, and along with Seigel Knight, will lead the charge today.
Frome Technical have also got off to a fast start scoring seven unanswered goals in their first two games and travel to Lucea today to face Rusea’s High who were unconvincing in their 1-0 win over Green Island on Wednesday.
Frome have had the measure of Rusea’s in recent times, losing only twice to the 10-time champions in the last three years and finished well ahead of them in Zone B last season.
Islington High and Tacky High could move further away from the field in Zone J when they take on St Mary Tech and Brimmervale, respectively, both of which have lost their two games played so far.
Tacky, who missed last season and moved from Zone K, are off to their best start ever and will hope to maintain their momentum.
At Jarrett Park, Cornwall College will hope to restart a new winning streak in Zone A when they take on rival St James High at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Cornwall’s win streak ended at nine games on Wednesday after they were held 1-1 by Green Pond, the last team to beat them, in the 2013 season.
Former Reggae Boy Theodore Whitmore, who took over the St James High job last season, is yet to beat Cornwall, losing both games last year, but is coming off a 4-1 win over Irwin High on Tuesday.
Cornwall will have to make do without central defender Odaine Lewis who was sent off after getting two yellow cards against Green Pond on Wednesday.
In any other season, a clash between St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Munro College would be big news, but neither team has won a game this season and are in unfamiliar territory near the bottom of the tables.
STETHS have drawn both games played so far and are on two points, one more than Munro, who lost to Maggotty on Wednesday and have not scored a goal in their two games played.
The lead will be up for grabs with three schools on four points, including Lacovia High and BB Coke, who will meet at Lacovia where the home team is expected to start as favourites.
Maggotty High, who are also on four points and share the lead, will be at pointless Newell High.
