St James High kick off against Irwin at Jarrett Park
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Former champions St James High will kick off their campaign in the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition this afternoon when they take on Irwin High at Jarrett Park in a Zone A game that was brought forward a day.
With Anchovy High withdrawing yesterday, and a venue clash tomorrow, ISSA yesterday moved the St James High game to this afternoon, with Cornwall College hosting Green Pond High tomorrow.
A second game will be played today with Marcus Garvey Technical taking on Brown’s Town at Drax Hall in a Zone I game.
Marcus Garvey will be seeking a second win after opening up on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Ocho Rios.
Brown’s Town, who only won two games last season, could also get points from their unplayed game against Cedric Titus, who only had six players with official identification cards.
In one game yesterday, Islington High joined St Mary High and Tacky High on three points in Zone J after edging Annotto Bay High 1-0 at Islington.
Tevin Thompson scored the match winner.
The game was scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was pushed back as there were not enough referees in St Mary for three games on one afternoon.
At Jarrett Park today, Irwin High will seek to rebound from their big loss at Cornwall College on Saturday, when they were beaten 1-8 when they faced St James High.
Irwin High, who failed to win a game last year, will be without starting goalkeeper Rusean Waite, who was sent off on Saturday, and Ranil Oilsworth, who came in for him, could get the nod today.
Despite the big loss on Saturday, Irwin’s Coach Oscar Irving was hopeful as he said they were down 1-5 at half-time and managed to hold Cornwall to just three goals in the second half with only 10 players.
He praised Trevaughn Walker, who he switched from striker to play in the defence, and said that helped the team to keep the score from getting out of hand.
St James High are seen as a likely candidate for qualification for the Inter-zone round and will be looking to start their season off on a positive note.
