Sterling sparks CC with three-timer in 6-1 win
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Joel Sterling scored the season’s first three-timer as Clarendon College (CC) opened the defence of the ISSA Flow daCosta Cup with a 6-1 win over Edwin Allen in their Zone H game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in St James yesterday. Clarendon led 3-1 at the half-time break in what turned out to be an easy win, as Seigel Knight also got two goals and Roger Russell got the other. Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, who started his second stint as the Clarendon College coach, was pleased with the result and said while his players wanted to “send a message” he was pleased with the execution. “We played pretty well this evening, the passing, the crossing and the finishing were on point and we have a brand new team, so we need to work as a unit,” he said. Conroy Brown said despite the lopsided loss for his team, he thought they played well. “It was a tough way to start the season but I think the boys played well.” Brown reasoned that they were caught too many times on the counter by a better Clarendon College team, but said they had to carry the fight after falling behind early. Clarendon College went ahead as early as the sixth minute when Sterling got behind the defence and powered home past goalkeeper Kajay Johnson. Edwin Allen drew level in the 26th minute when Khimane Orr converted a penalty kick, but Clarendon College was back up by a goal a minute later when Knight scored with a sublime ball that looped from the right flank and beat the flailing arms of Johnson into the top corner of the goal. Russell tapped into an empty goal after Johnson was injured in trying to block Greggton Charlton in the 35th minute, as Clarendon College improved to a 3-1 lead. It was one-way traffic in the second half as Clarendon College swarmed over the Edwin Allen half of the pitch. Knight powered a shot past Johnson in the 63rd minute, while Sterling completed his three-timer with goals in the 69th and 77th minutes.
