Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth
SHERICKA Jackson added to Jamaica’s medal stock at the World Championships in Beijing, China, when she won the bronze medal in what was her first appearance at the championships.
Jackson, who won in a personal best time of 49.99 seconds, led a quartet of Jamaican runners in the final of the event, the first time the country has achieved this feat.
Jamaican champion Christine Day also set a lifetime best of 50.14 seconds for fourth, with 2014 Commonwealth champion Stephenie Ann McPherson fifth in 50.42 while 2014 Diamond Race winner Novlene Williams-Mills, who recorded a season’s best of 50.47, ended in sixth position.
“I am feeling good. First World Championships, first medal. I am pleased with my performance. To be honest, I was a bit nervous but I think I executed well the first part of my race but the field went out very hard and the only thing, I had to do was to run my own race and I came home with a personal best and a bronze medal, what more can I ask for,” said an elated Jackson.
The versatile American sprinter Alyson Felix was the winner in a world leading 49.26. Behind Felix in second position was Shaunae Miller of The Bahamas in a personal best of 49.67 seconds.
There was huge disappointment for the normally hugely reliable championship performer and defending champion, Christine Ohuruogu. The Briton who looked well placed for a medal with 100 metres remaining faded rapidly in the final straight and wound up eighth in 50.63 seconds.
