Phillips, Fletcher capture Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Senior Tennis titles
ROWLAND ‘Randy’ Phillips and Ffion Fletcher captured the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, at the 2015 Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Senior Tennis Championships which ended at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre yesterday.
The men’s singles final resumed yesterday after bad light from afternoon rain on Saturday forced a halt to the match.
Phillips, seeded at number two in the men’s singles main draw, defeated defending champion and top seed Damion Johnson in three sets, 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, 6-2 in two hours 35 minutes.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Fletcher defeated third-seeded 12-year-old Jenna Harrison in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 in one-hour 14 minutes.
For winning the crown for the first time, Phillips collected the first prize cash award of $100,000, while Johnson walked away with $50,000.
Phillips said he was happy to have won, but it was a very tough match.
“I am very pleased with my performance and I think I played extremely well through the tournament and lost only one set and that was to Johnson in the final. In the first set I made too many errors despite it going into a tie-breaker,” Phillips said.
The 21-year-old added: “The rest overnight was good for me as it gave me more time to rethink my game and it worked well.
“I think I really dominated the third set. However, it was a good match, but Johnson made too many mistakes and I was more consistent.”
Johnson said his performance was off and his service game was horrible. “I played much better on Saturday despite producing a few mistakes, but yesterday I was really very bad. You cannot win them all the time as you have to lose some and go back to the drawing board and correct these mistakes.
“Phillips is a very good player but he did not do anything better than me as I beat myself, but still it was a very good match,” said the 30-year-old.
Fletcher, who won the women’s singles final, collected $40,000 for her victory, and said that she was very pleased with her performance. “I expected her to give me a good fight and in the second set I was trailing 5-2 and I just went back to the basic to pull through to win.”
Harris, who is a presently a student of Campion College, said she was very disappointed, especially in the second set where she led 5-2 and lost.
“I was hurrying my shots and making too many mistakes. I will have to go back to the drawing board and keep training.”
Meanwhile, top seed Ruddy Armstrong won the men’s Class Two singles by crushing fourth seed Gregory Spencer in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, while the men’s 45 and over singles was won by top seed Troy Gichie, who defeated fourth seed Warren Bell in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
