Johnson, Phillips to contest Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Senior Tennis Championship singles final
TOP seed Damion Johnson and second-seeded Rowland Phillips will contest the men’s singles final of the 2015 Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Senior Tennis Championships today at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre starting at 3:00 pm.
Johnson defeated McCoy Malcolm in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, while Phillips demolished Marcus Malcolm 6-0, 6-0 in semi-final action yesterday.
Malcolm, the Jamaica number one player for the past three years, has not dropped a set leading up to the final and is expecting a tough match from Phillips.
“Right now Phillips is on top and his form is so good from playing in the recent Davis Cup competition for Jamaica last month in Panama. Although the match should be tough, I am hoping to win and retain my title,” Johnson said.
Phillips said that though the match was easily won, it was a very good game for him as he did not produce many errors. “Although the match was not close it can still be tough.”
“I have never played Johnson in a tournament; I only practise with him for the recent Davis Cup team competition for Jamaica,” said Phillips.
He vowed to play his own game and take it to Johnson.
“I took the championships by taking each game one at a time, and hopefully I play well and come out victorious.”
Meanwhile, third-seeded Jenna Harris clinched her place in the women’s singles final when she upset top seed Selena Blythe in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. She will meet the winner of the second semi-final between second-seeded Ffion Fletcher and Machaela Stephens in the final, which is slated to start at 1:00 pm. The second semi-final was still in progress at press time.
