Sebastian Coe elected IAAF president
BEIJING, China — Britain’s Sebastian Coe was a short while ago elected president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), securing 115 of the 207 votes.
His rival, Sergey Bubka of Ukraine, got 92 votes.
Lord Coe is a former track and field star for Britain, becoming the only man to win back-to-back gold and silver medals in the 1500m and 800m in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics, respectively. He has been a vice-president of the IAAF since 2007.
Jamaica voted for Lord Coe.
In fact, president of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Dr Warren Blake told OBSERVER ONLINE that “we campaigned hard” for him.
Lord Coe succeeds Lamine Diack, of Senegal, who has led the IAAF for 16 years.
