Must-haves while travelling
TRAVELLING can be so much fun – especially over the summer months. We get to experience new and old places, beautiful landscapes, family reunions, and outdoor adventures, to name a few. However, oftentimes when we travel to another country we initially find ourselves feeling a little “out-of-sorts”, basically not like “ourselves” for a day or two.
Not only are we in a different physical environment, we also have to adjust to the water, food, air, and of course the time difference. Jet lag can also take a toll on our bodies from anywhere between a couple of days to a week. Whether you’re travelling for pleasure or business, there are a few simple items that I highly recommend taking with you that will help you to maintain a healthy immune system, and make your time away as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible.
Here are my top seven travel essentials:
Lemons/limes
Carry a few lemons or limes in your suitcase (if allowed) until you are able to get to a local market or supermarket for your fresh produce. Lemons and limes are great immune boosters; squeezed into your water they will help to avoid congestion, colds and flu. Lemon water is also great for digesting foreign foods or foods that our bodies are not used to.
Colloidal silver
Colloidal silver is an old favourite that is now very popular for a host of illnesses and diseases. Because of its antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory nature, it has been known to effectively treat common colds and flu to HIV/AIDS, herpes and pneumonia.
For topical use it is great for treating many skin conditions such as eczema, wounds and burns by stimulating speedy healing in the skin and soft tissues. If you suffer from allergies and sinusitis you can expect some great relief by using it as a nasal spray.
Spirulina
Dubbed as “one of the foods of the future” by the United Nations, spirulina is definitely a powerhouse when it comes to nutrients. Whether powdered, (my preferred option),
or in tablet form, this
low-calorie alkalising super food with no trans fats will provide you with high levels of nutrition, health and energy. It is a high protein food, easy to digest (important when travelling), and a great source of vitamins and minerals such as B12, iron and calcium, to name a few. Additionally, it is a great travel item because it will preserve all its nutrients under most conditions.
Whole foods multi-vitamin supplement
If you consistently maintain a good balanced diet, this may not apply to you. However, if you are not that person then be sure to supplement your diet with a natural whole food multi-vitamin. This is also important during travel which sometimes results in one’s
diet lacking in nutrients due to long-haul flights, skipped meals, or over-indulgence in processed junk foods. With so many whole food supplements on the market start by getting advice from your health practitioner or speak to your local health food store.
Reading Material (book/iPad/tablet)
This can help to counteract long hours of travel, waiting and downtime. I find reading helps to exercise the mind, and at other times it will help to keep you calm and relaxed.
Herbal laxative
It is very common when traveling to find that you may not be eliminating or going to the bathroom as regularly. To prevent constipation, take a herbal laxative tea or enema bag for cleansing once or twice a week. Keeping your body light and releasing backed-up waste and toxins will add ease and enjoyment to your trip.
Chamomile tea
This is a really effective tea to help you relax and get some restful sleep. If you find yourself in a completely different time zone, it can be quite hard adjusting your internal clock to the environment around you and getting your blissful beauty sleep. A cup of chamomile tea an hour before you plan to sleep can be very effective.
Bonus tip
Carry some healthy travel snacks to hold you whilst you are en route. You could try taking a green smoothie, a natural energy bar, a fruit salad and a trail mix or a couple ounces of raw nuts and seeds. I love taking kale chips too.
