Mane Management
We take you to the scene of the recently held Caribbean’s Next Top Model casting call for inspiration from the upcoming fleet of model hopefuls.
What caught our attention were the equally hot hairdos and model fabulousness. The ladies lit up for our photog showing off fab hair and striking glares.
Later, from rope twists and box braids to wavy coloured tresses, the team at Babae Styles Hair Salon create seven looks for summer. Your Under the Dryer glam squad gives you full coverage.
Dianne Brown
Model Dianne Brown decided to go ’90s fierce and mod with this slicked-back gelled ‘do. Her hair tip? “Simplicity always wins.”
Chevonese Stultz
Model hopeful Chevonese Stultz opted for grey box braids to jazz up her appearance after shaving her head to achieve an edgy look for Caribbean Fashion Week.
Her hair tip? “Take breaks in-between braided styles to allow your roots to breathe.”
Danielle Little
University of Technology, Jamaica food service management student Danielle Little uses natural oils, like shea butter and jojoba, in a spray bottle with water, to keep her hair fresh and moist. Little started with a low-fade cut, and later opted for a purple mohawk. The growth and colour fade resulted in the burgundy colour that she says she’s in love with.
Her hair tip? “Ensure you protect your hair before sun exposure.”
Sherika Lawrence
Model aspirant Sherika Lawrence wanted to switch up her look post-graduation with an edgy hairdo. Her first step was to do a complete 180º and shave the sides of her head, then do a rope twist with the hair at the crown. One thing’s for sure, Lawrence’s ‘do is definitely edgy.
Her hair tip? “Never be afraid of taking risks, just ensure you do what works for you.”
Rashada Lee
University of the West Indies anatomy student Rashada Lee has been wearing locks for as long as she can remember, and did a quick finger roll with a dab of beeswax to keep her locks fresh and neat. She finished by rolling into a high bun. This, she claims, “…enhances my facial features and bone structure”.
Her hair tip? “Palm- and finger-rolling will keep your locks fresh; use a little beeswax for sheen.”
Ieasher Chambers
Frome Technical High School sixth-form student Ieasher Chambers achieved her faux locks by first braiding her hair in a box braid pattern, then wrapping with Marley braids, a DIY project that was done in under 12 hours. For upkeep, Chambers applies beeswax and Olive Oil Hair Lotion.
Her hair tip? “Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!”
Stephanie Lawrence
After a week of protective styles, model hopeful Stephanie Lawrence decided to give her roots a break. A quick wash, and an application of coconut and shea butter oils was just enough to moisturise her hair. She then used a shoelace to keep her hair out of her face.
Her hair tip? “Use a lot of natural oil hair products for whatever hairstyle you choose.”
