They’re All The Same…
As Jamaican’s (and humans in general) sometimes we just get lazy with our names for things. I mean who can remember all those brands. But sometimes entire generations grow up to think that popular brand names are the actual names of the products. Tell us how many got you.
1 Fab – How many of us got sent to the shop for ‘Fab’ and knew we were supposed to get soap powder. Just FYI ‘Fab’ is under the Colgate-Palmolive and makes things that aren’t just soap powder. 2 Lasco – Powdered milk. Simple. We literally can’t imagine referring to anything milk and powdered as anything but ‘Lasco’.3 Pampers (aka ‘Pampas’)– We know this one got most of y’all. They’re diapers, and many other brands exist. Who knew Pampers also branded other baby products? We didn’t.4 Cutex – Does a woman paint her nails with anything but ‘Cutex’? Not according to us.5 Q Tips – So those things everyone tells you not to stick in your ear… they’re called cotton swabs. Funny story, the maker originally wanted to call them ‘baby gays’ (somehow don’t think that would have caught on as widely in Jamaica).6 Vaseline – Petroleum Jelly? What is that? OHHHH, you mean Vaseline?7 Colgate – There are many, many, many brands of toothpaste. Jamaicans only use ‘colgate’ though… Or so it would seem anyway.8 ChapStick – Again, there are many, many, many brands of lip balm. But Jamaicans only use ChapStick.9 Ziploc – Is there really another name for those bags that you pull across the plastic thing and seal? Dem caan really expect man fi seh ‘zipper storage bag’ everytime….10 Chiffon – Margarine, butter, oleo… they’re all ‘Chiffon’ to us.
