World Cup dream for Vangelee Williams
SUNSHINE Girl Vangelee Williams is all set to make her dream debut this summer after being selected to represent her country in Sydney, Australia.
The 23-year-old Williams, who is currently studying Physical Education at Micro University College, was drafted into Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls team set for the World Cup in August.
It was the moment Williams awaited her whole netball career.
“It feels very good knowing that I am going to represent my country for the first time at the Netball World Cup this summer. I have always dreamt about playing at a World Cup; playing at the highest level. The World Cup has always been by dream and the fact that I am going there, I am very much happy, excited and eager to get it over with,” Williams told the Jamaica Observer.
“I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am with my achievement. I have always trained with dedication and determination with the ambition of playing in a World Cup. This is a dream come true,” added Williams, who has 27 international caps for the Sunshine Girls.
“I haven’t been to Australia before. Australia is a netball country and the fact that they will have a lot of supporters, as their crowds will be big each game day, so I am looking forward to that and I am looking to play, have a lot of fun and doing great things,” she continued.
Williams is currently undertaking an intense training programme each week with her teammates in preparation for the World Cup.
“Couple weeks ago I was out of training due to an ankle injury, but I was doing some light work while not training with the squad. Right now I am pretty much heading out as I was to compete against Barbados in the recently concluded three-game series.
“Whilst I’m training hard on the tactical side of my game each week with my teammates I’m also working hard in my local gym to ensure that my fitness is at its peak in preparation for the World Cup,” the Manchester Spurs player explained.
With her elasticity and well-timed interceptions, Williams played a critical role as Jamaica defeated England to claim the bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
Williams first took up netball at the age of 10, and has since progressed to the national team and at one point was the captain of the Under-21 team.
She made her debut on June 1, 2012 against South Africa and has been a permanent fixture in the senior squad since.
