William Knibb tops Rita Marley essay competition
NASTASSIA Grossett of William Knibb Memorial High School emerged victor in this year’s Rita Marley Foundation essay competition.
The competition, now in its second year, was held between May and June. Students were invited to write on the topic, “If you were selected to address world leaders on behalf the youth, what would be your message and why?” They had a 1,000-word limit and had to provide evidence to support their arguments.
Seventeen students from seven high schools from across the island entered. York Castle High School students Antonio Hall and Shakera Duncan placed second and third, respectively, while Aldane Walters of Wolmer’s Boys’ School was fourth.
Manager of the Rita Marley Foundation, Rosemary Duncan, underscored the power of the pen at the recent awards ceremony; as well as the foundation’s commitment to empowering young minds through this medium.
“Rita Marley Foundation is committed to working with the youth to make them strong by elevating, educating and empowering them. Writing is empowering,” she said.
President/founder of the foundation, Rita Marley, who joined the proceedings via Skype said she was very impressed with the entrants, and was heartened that they represented such a wide number of parishes.
“Be serious about education because it is the key to success and liberation,” she encouraged the students.
