‘Callaloo’ Henry guides Uncle Taf to victory
Uncle Taf, under a masterful ride from Wesley ‘Callaloo’ Henry, won the top-rated race, an Overnight Allowance event in fine style at Caymanas Park yesterday.
After being in a stretch duel with the consistent Prince Andrew and veteran jockey Winston Griffiths, the Solomon Sharpe-trained Uncle Taf responded well from the urging of Henry and drew away at the end to score by a length-and-a-quarter in the three-year-olds and upward event going over 1,400 metres.
Prince Andrew held on for second position by one-and-a-half lengths over the fast-finishing Royal Vibes (Robert Halledeen up). Princess Shine, the mount of O’Brien White, completed the frame in the 10-horse field.
Owned by Sharpe and his father Owen, Uncle Taf, who was winning for the first time this year, covered the distance in a quick 1:25:4 minutes.
It was the second winner for Henry, as he had earlier won aboard Speedy Process in the third race over 1,400 metres.
Also riding two winners was top apprentice Shamaree Muir. His winners were Blue Bomber Boy in the second race, and Seeking Hope, winner of the fourth race, the Dr Clifford Grey Memorial Cup, which was split into two divisions.
The second division was won by Nasdaq Princess, ridden by O’Brien White.
The highly thought of Buzz Nightmare returned from a four-month break with a smashing performance, winning by over 10 lengths in a non-winners of event over 1,100 metres in 1:06:2 minutes.
Racing continues on Saturday and Sunday.
