Jamaica’s Chin, McNair win titles at ITF Junior doubles
JAMAICA’S John Chin and Haley McNair captured titles in boys’ and girls’ 14 and under doubles finals, respectively, at the 2015 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Jamaica International Tennis Junior Tournament being played at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre, yesterday.
Chin and McNair paired with different partners to achieve their goals. Chin and Jacobi Cain of Antigua defeated Edward Laquis of Trinidad and Tobago (TTO replacing TRI) and Tariq Simons of Bermuda in straight sets 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 (super tie-breaker). They had beaten the top pair in the semi-finals.
McNair, who paired with Maya Pitts of the US as the top pair, defeated her Jamaican pair of Michaela Stephens and Jenna Harrison 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 to capture the girls’ 14 and under doubles title. McNair and Potts had beaten the second-seeded pair in their semi-finals.
Jamaica came close of winning the boys’ and girls’ 14 and under singles titles, but suffered defeats in both finals yesterday.
In the boys’ 14 and under singles final, second-seeded Jacobi Bain of Jamaica lost to unseeded Jaxson Harbour of the US in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0), while Jamaica’s Michaela Stephens went down in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) in the girls’ 14 and under singles final to top seed Maya Pitts of the US.
The semi-finals of the boys’ and girls’ 18 and under main draw singles will be played today. In yesterday’s quarter-finals, top seed Kariann Pierre-Louis of the US rushed past fifth seed Lillian Gabrielson of Norway in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while second-seeded Rika Tanaka of Japan defeated seventh seed Kiana Marshall of Barbados in three sets, 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-1.
Unseeded Najah Dawson of the US knocked out third seed and compatriot Alexandra Sabe when she retired in the third set 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (retired), while unseeded Alma Ewing of the USA brushed aside compatriot Safiya Carrington in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
Meanwhile, in the quarter-finals played in the boys’ 18 and under singles sixth-seeded Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina knocked out the top seed Salvador Mijares of Venezuela in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
Second seed William Tutecky of Canada defeated Morgan Dill of the US 6-1, 6-4; third-seeded Olukayode Alafia Damina Ayeni of the US beat Edson David Ortiz Tovar of Mexico 7-6 (7-5), 6-1; unseeded Vignesh Subramanyan of the US eliminated fourth seed Patrick Sydown of Aruba in straight sets 6-0, 7-5.
The tournament continues today at 9:00 am with semi-finals action.
