Huge quad tear ends Taylor’s Gold Cup campaign
TORONTO, Canada — Jamaica defender Jermaine Taylor’s CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign is over.
The player, who sustained an injury in Jamaica’s high- tempo 1-0 win over El Salvador at the BMO Field on Tuesday, has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament, and beyond.
“I will be out for between six and eight weeks,” Taylor told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.
The Houston Dynamo player said a scan revealed that “I suffered a serious quad tear that is very large”.
Taylor, who was having a great tournament at the heart of defence up to Tuesday evening, challenged an El Salvador player on a break-away in the sixth minute, but while he stopped the threat, he came out on the bitter end of the challenge.
Reading FC’s Michael Hector, who was outstanding in the Copa America, replaced Taylor in the game that Jamaica won to top Group B of the Gold Cup, moving to a quarter-final showdown with Haiti in Baltimore on Saturday.
Another Jamaican player, goalkeeper Dwayne Miller, was also injured on the night when he caught an El Salvador boot to the head and was rushed to hospital. He was later released after precautionary checks.
His place was taken by Ryan Thompson, who made a number of brilliant saves to deny the Central American attackers.
