Lucea FC will return to the Western Confederation Super League, after sitting out the last season, following their 3-0 victory over Mt Pelier at Watson Taylor Park in Lucea on Sunday.
The win earned them the Hanover Football Association’s Charley’s JB Rum/Captain’s Bakery and Grill-sponsored Major League title for the second time.
Oshane Kerr scored in the first half, while Chovain Anderson and Dalton Hylton added in the second half for Lucea FC, in a dominant display.
Lucea FC, which will join first-time qualifiers Reggae Youths from St James and Clark’s Town of Trelawny in next season’s Super League, will hope to do better this time around as they lasted just one season, 2013-2014, in the Western Confederation Super League competition.
During that time, the Hanover team managed five wins and conceded 32 goals, while scoring just 25, as they compiled a mere 19 points, in a failed effort to earn a second season in the competition.
On Sunday, however, they made the best of their chances against a wasteful Mt Pelier team that started both halves as the better team, but blew numerous scoring chances.
Davian Myers of Lucea FC came closest to opening the scores in the 17th minute when his left-foot shot from just inside the 18-yard box flew wide of the target.
Three minutes later, Kerr’s effort was just wide of the far left post, but he got it perfect in the 23rd minute, curling free kick from just outside the 18-yard box into the top left hand corner of the goal to beat goalkeeper Evron Laing.
Oliver Bright should have drawn Mt Pelier level in the 60th minute after he caught Lucea FC’s goalkeeper Vivian James off his line and outside of the 18-yard box, and with time to pick his spot, but his shot went well over the unprotected goal.
His miss would come back to haunt Mt Pelier, as in the 74th minute, a minute after he replaced Sebastian Samuels, Anderson latched on to a low corner and guided it into the left corner of the Mt Pelier FC’s goal to double his team’s advantage.
The veteran Lenore Campbell who came on in the second half had a chance to pull Mt Pelier to within a goal in the 88th minute, but his shot from inside the six-yard box was just inches wide of the left post.
Lucea FC added another goal three minutes into time added, when Mt Pelier once against failed to defend a corner, allowing Hylton to guide the ball into the lower left corner.
