Uppa Tune skips to victory on the Reggae beat
The speedy American-bred Uppa Tune continued to show his versatility when he scored another good ‘A’ Class victory in the Reggae Trophy over 1,000 metres straight last Saturday at Caymanas Park.
Under the guidance of jockey Paul Francis and carrying top weight of 57.0 kilogrammes, Uppa Tune (Concorde’s Tune – Uppa Hugie) stormed through in the last furlong to beat stable companion Pete’swildone (O’Brien White) by one-and-a-half lengths in the three-year-olds and upward event.
This was after leader Crucial Appeal, under Shamaree Muir, swerved dramatically to the left, giving Uppa Tune the opportunity to cruise home to victory. Crucial Appeal ended in third place. The winning time was a career best 0:57:2 seconds.
The result of this year’s race was the same as last year, with the main difference being a change of trainers from Ian Parsard to his father Harry.
“This horse runs best when fresh. He has speed and I knew once we get clear running space we would be hard to beat. We won this race last year from in front, and this year we just sat behind the pace and stormed through in the final furlong for the win. This performance shows the versatility of Uppa Tune as he can run from anywhere and still win,” Francis told the Complete Racing Guide.
Parsard said that he was happy with his charge’s performance.
“His performance was excellent. Winning while carrying 57.0 kilogrammes is just fantastic. I expected him to win and Pete’swildone to run a better race, but it was just coincidence that they ended up one, two,” he said.
The PJK Team-owned Uppa Tune was recording his second win for the season from six starts and 12th overall for lifetime earnings of just over $8.5 million.
