Racketeers, Ingleside Pandaz triumphant in JBA Club KO
THE Jamaica Badminton Association Club Knockout wound up at Constant Spring Golf Club recently, with Racketeers Badminton Club (RBC) taking home trophies in the A and B division, and Ingleside Pandaz triumphant in the D division.
The A division match-up between Racketeers and Chisholm Champs (CC) began with an exciting match between Neil Saunders (CC) and John Muirhead (RBC) in the men’s singles event. Muirhead raced to a first game win, 21-12, but Saunders countered to win the second game 21-18.
He was unable to sustain the challenge, losing the third set and the match to Muirhead, with a final score
of 12-21, 21-18, 12-21.
Racketeers’ Jade Clarke went on to secure the women’s singles against Terry Walker of Chisholm Champs to give the Racketeers a 2-0 lead. The team was successful in the remaining events (men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed events) and brought home the trophy with a final 5-0 scoreline.
In the B division, Racketeers faced off against Mandeville Rangers. In a repeat of the men’s singles match-up, Jon Michael Linton of Racketeers sought revenge on Dave Thompson of Mandeville Rangers. On this occasion it was Thompson who took the first game at 23-21, but Linton rallied convincingly to a 21-6 win in the second game, forcing a third set. Linton again failed to gain the victory, losing the third game, and the match to Thompson for a final score of 21-23, 21-6, 11-21. Racketeers named Jade Clarke for the ladies singles to take on Alana Bailey from Mandeville Rangers. Clarke secured the victory for her team 21-14, 21-11.
The Racketeers continued a clean sweep of their tie against the Rangers, winning the men’s doubles 21-16, 21-11, the women’s doubles 21-19, 21-19, and the mixed doubles 21-17, 21-12, to take home the title of B Division Knockout Champions.
The D Division finalists were Ingleside Pandaz and Racketeers, competing for the third title in the Club Knockout Competition.
The Pandaz, represented by Steven Stewart, convincingly secured the first match in the men’s singles event, winning 21-13, 21-13. Jo Jo Silvera of Racketeers brought the score to 1-1 when she defeated Pandaz’ Davina Turner easily, 21-16, 21-16 in the women’s singles event. Undaunted, the Pandaz fought back to the lead winning the men’s doubles match 21-7, 21-18.
The Pandaz were forced to concede the women’s doubles, bringing the match-up between the clubs level at 2-2. The win was to be decided by the mixed doubles match, but Steven Laidlaw and Dionne Brown of Racketeers were no match for Pandaz’s David Mullings and Davina Turner, who ensured the trophy for the Pandaz in this division.
