Chow, Nelson dominate in Winnipeg, Canada
WINNIPEG, Canada (CMC) – Jamaican jockey Chavion Chow won the feature CAN$25,000 Harry Jeffrey Stakes with 4-1 chance, Witt Six, as he reeled off a triple to dominate last Saturday’s eight-race card at Assiniboia Downs.
The 28-year-old, the championship leader at the Winnipeg oval, produced a stalking ride aboard the three-year-old brown gelding to beat the three-year-old non-winners – other than for their maiden – by half-length going a mile.
Chow had earlier opened his account in race four when he made all the running with favourite Jon Q to beat the three-year-olds and upward – without a win other than their maiden – by 3-1/2 lengths.
Chow’s other score came in race six over seven furlongs when he piloted 3-1 bet, Valedictory Address, to a 1-1/2 length win over the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares who had never won two races.
Three-time defending Jamaican champion jockey Dane Nelson rode another triple to highlight the seven-race programme at the Assiniboia Downs racetrack in Winnipeg, Canada last Friday.
Nelson’s winners included the Don Schnell-conditioned Zdeno, who romped home by three comfortable lengths in the CA$18,000 Plenty Chilly Stakes for three-year-olds and upward going over seven furlongs.
His other winners were Cat’s Classy Rider in the third race over one mile and Kenton in the fifth race over seven and one-half furlongs.
“To win races overseas is just wonderful. I am riding in good form and I just want to continue that way,” he said.
Nelson rode another winner on Saturday.
Nelson, who has now ridden three triples and a four-timer, is tied for second position on 27 winners with Christopher Husbands and Adolfo Morales in the race for the jockeys’ championships. Chavion Chow leads the standing on 30 winners.
“When I came here the leaders were 14 ahead, and to be three winners behind speaks a lot of my abilities. I am just happy to win races. I must thank all everyone up here (Canada) who has been supporting me,” he declared.
Nelson has surpassed the number of winners Omar Walker rode when he was in Canada last year. Walker rode 26 winners.
Chow leads the standings with 30 wins, three clear of Barbadian Christopher Husbands, Adolfo Morales and Jamaican Dane Nelson, all on 27.
