Jamaica end WUG with 5 medals
JAMAICA ended with five medals at the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea after Chad Wright finished fourth in the men’s discus throw and Salcia Slack failed to complete the heptathlon on yesterday’s penultimate day of athletics competition.
With just today’s final day of competition left, Jamaica had slipped two places to seventh in the medals table with one gold, three silver and a bronze.
Danielle Williams added the gold medal in the women’s 100m after she had taken bronze two years ago. Sprinters Kemarley Brown and Shimyra Williams took silver medals in the men’s and women’s 100m, respectively; Simoya Campbell won silver in the women’s 800m, while Kedisha Dallas won the bronze in the women’s 200m.
Yesterday, Wright had a best throw of 60.10m after opening up with 59.88m and 58.16m before fouling his next two attempts. He then got his best throw before ending with 58.63m.
Slack came into the second day of the multi-discipline event in eighth place and over 200 points behind the leader, and had a sub-par 5.60m in the long jump, then threw the javelin 41.84m before failing to show up for the 800m run.
