Injury to Tsetsi Davis forces postponement of Contender series
THE first semi-final match in the Wray & Nephew Contender Series, scheduled for tonight, has been postponed.
The postponement was forced because of an injury to Tsetsi Davis, one of the pre-tournament favourites this season, during a recent training session. Davis, who was defeated by Sakima Mullings in the 2014 finals, suffered an upper body injury while training and the doctors have concluded that he is unfit to fight until July 1.
The next match in the Wray & Nephew Contender Series will be held next Wednesday, June 24 with the first semi-finals between Devon ‘Concrete’ Moncrieff and Kemahl ‘The Hitman’ Russell. Davis will now battle Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes on Wednesday, July 1 at the Chinese Benevolent Association in St Andrew.
Davis said this season makes it the third consecutive year that he has advanced to the semi-final round, and he still has high hopes of being the victor.
“I feel disappointed because I wanted the fight to happen this Wednesday night and get it over with. However, accidents do happen and I couldn’t stop it. But, this might just be my opportunity to get more time to prepare for my next match. I am so sorry that my fans are disappointed and I would like to apologise to them,” he said.
Like Davis, Holmes is disappointed that their fight will not happen for another two weeks.
“I feel really disappointed, because I was ready and on the top of my game. It is really a setback. However, every disappointment is for the good. I will use the next two weeks to continue preparing for the fight and increase my level of confidence. I knew this fight would have been mine.”
