His biggest health concern
JUNE is Men’ s Health Month and tomorrow marks the beginning of National Men’s Health Week, which is celebrated as the week leading up to and including Father’s Day . Its purpose is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. Your Health Your Wealth wants men to make their health a priority and spoke to several men to find out about their biggest health concerns.
Here’s what they had to say and check out this special men’s health issue to find out what the experts had to say.
Junior, 27: Prostate cancer, and the horrors of the exam. As a straight man I am not particularly keen on anyone fingering my rear for any reason, including medical.
Damain, 34: Cancer. I dread the very thought of it. Any type of cancer. The word makes me fearful.
K S, 29: With my current situation, being diabetic, I have a lot of concerns. Apart from maintaining stable blood glucose levels, I’m concerned about sexual prowess. When I found out that smoking and diabetes, in most cases, lead to impotence, I stopped smoking. Never thought about it, don’t miss it – just stopped smoking!
Anthony, 24: There are numerous things that come to mind, one is definitely cancer, but heart problems are my biggest concern because I sometimes feel my chest tightening up and there are times when I just start feeling a sharp pain.
Shaunjaye, 28: Well, to be honest, my biggest health concern is getting prostate cancer, which I am told is very prevalent in Jamaica. To further compound this problem, treatment or the lack thereof can lead to erectile dysfunction, which is also another major health concern for me. To make matters worse, screening prostate cancer is rather intrusive.
Damian, 35: My biggest health concern as a man would be more help for older males who cannot afford the costs associated with health care. I’m very concerned that many need health care but can’t afford the high cost for fees, test and surgery.
Marvin, 29: Prostate, when they are going to do that exam. And will my male member still be working in old age.
A M, 26: Fear of prostate cancer. It’s what all men dread. And nobody seems to know if it’s what we eat or whatever causes it. Some people say it’s the ackee, others say all kinda crap, but mi nah give up my ackee.
Michael, 33: My biggest concern is the fear of prostate cancer. And it’s not the fear of the test that drives it. It’s the indignity that I think accompanies it. I am conscious of prostate health and fear the diminished capacity of such an illness. Impotence. Incontinence. Pain.
