‘Tee’, anyone?
IN what proved to be four exciting days of golf, Jonathan Newnham secured his spot on the 2015 national team with a sterling performance on the Cinnamon Hill and Half Moon Golf courses last weekend.
Newnham secured his lead on day one with a 65 at Cinnamon Hill, which puts him on par with the current course record. Newnham went on to shoot 70, 72 and 72 to demonstrate his skill as one of Jamaica’s best golfers.
Sean Morris, who is also a national representative, scored well (72, 76, 75, 74) over the four days and stayed in the seventies to finish second in the trials. William Knibbs was third on 299 and Owen Samuda ended the trials on 300. Sandals-based Romaine Evans, who has represented Jamaica as a junior golfer, tied with Ian Facey for fifth position on 308.
Montego Bay-based Keith Stein finished at the top of the Senior Trials with a combined total of 310 (75, 77, 82, 76) ahead of Greg Chong and Radcliff Knibbs, who tied for second position on 317. Chong and Knibbs played a three-hole aggregate playoff in which Knibbs triumphed after shooting birdie, par and double bogey. Robert Chin was third on 322.
JGA President Peter Chin, who took the lead at the start of the Super Senior Trials with 75, cemented his hold on the second day and continued to apply pressure on the field to finish with 316 and a place on the National Super Senior Team. Easton Williams was second with 328 and former JGA President Gordon Hutchinson came in third with 331.
Madelyn Piccininni proved a formidable opponent in the ladies trials by scoring four rounds in the seventies. Piccininni shot 77, 73, 70 and 77. Tiana Cruz finished five shots behind on 302 after shooting 73 on Sunday. Kei Harris was third on 306. Jodi Barrow finished fourth on 307.
The Selection Committee will be announcing the national team shortly, after which they will be in training for the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships, set to take place in Jamaica from July 26-August 1, 2015.
