Walkman anyone?
Many of us remember with fondness the childhood that so many children nowadays seem to be denied. Many of the younger TEENs hear from our older peers how the 90’s were the best. And if you were born in the 90’s, they were the best! Here’s how to know if you are a Jamaican kid born in the last decade of the 20th century.
You remember when scotch bonnet pepper was still hot and patties were spicy. Eyes were runny and tongues burned.Dragon Ball Z, Lizzie McGuire, Even Stevens, Power Rangers, Ed, Edd and Eddy and Johnny Bravo and, and, and…
You grew up buying a ‘bag juice’ for $5 and $10. We’ve even seen it for $30 these days.
You remember Kiss cakes. These soft succulent wonders of the human world were banned and now we have to rely on our friends from Trinidad to smuggle us some.
As a TEEN, or somewhere around that age, Digicel’s ‘free nights’ was a big deal. Whether it was ‘yu likkle boy/girlfriend’ or group convos, free nights did shot!
Flashlight phones were had. This might have been your first phone or the one that lasted through your schooldays but these phones were near indestructible, plus came in handy whenever JPS let down the side.
If you didn’t have a flashlight, you had a fancy ‘flip phone’. One thing is for certain: when that phone rang and you took it out and flipped to answer, you felt like a boss of bosses.
Music was played on CDs, and maybe even cassettes. As time went on, Walkman’s and CD players came out and then they were the craze.
You remember when there was dancing in dancehall. “Everybody can dance, but a nuh everybody a dancer!” Dancers were celebrities in the own right (like Bogle aka Missa Wacky), and every month or so there was a big new dance move.
You played outside. Or, that thing that your parents got annoyed at and told you to stop playing with was not a tablet. It was a Gameboy or a Nintendo DS which was used for Pokemon battles, trading etc.
You remember shows like
