If not the United States, then who?
Dear Editor,
Why is it that some people have an issue with the United States authorities leading the corruption investigation into FIFA’s affairs? Seriously now, does it matter who is leading the charge? And, would the revelations be different?
In my view, if there is evidence of illegal monies being wired from one accused to another using the US banking/wire system, then the Americans have every right to investigate.
I know the US is on to something when I see the former head of Russia’s KGB, now President Putin, coming out against the move. We have to remember that he has been ‘most transparent’ on the Ukraine issue.
And, for me, a moot point is: Which other country would have been willing to take this on? The answer appears to be “none”, because these allegations have been swirling around for years and not even the Swiss, in whose country FIFA is headquartered, have made any meaningful effort to get beyond the frequent denials of the effective machinery of handling such aspersions by would-be whistleblowers.
Whether it’s the US or any other country leading this crusade, it does change the fact that the matter needs to be investigated.
In the meantime, we in the Caribbean should be listening out for any other names in the region that may be called. I feel sure there will be. As my grandfather used to say: Show me your company and I’ll tell you who you are. Wait for it.
Kudos to the USA. Lock up every last one of them that deserves it.
