Former French star Marcel Desailly for Guinness Street Football Challenge
GUINNESS to bring football icon Marcel Desailly to Jamaica The Guinness Street Football Challenge Caribbean finals set to take place June 27-28 will see a special appearance by Guinness ‘Made of More’ ambassador and former French international Marcel Desailly.
The renowned footballer was as a member of the France team which won the FIFA World Cup in 1998 when they hosted. Desailly was also a European Championship winner in 2000.
The former professional footballer — popular for his unique style and combination of defensive, physical and mental skills — was also included in 2004 as one of the world’s greatest living players on the ‘FIFA 100’ list of notable footballers compiled by notorious Brazilian football legend Pele.
Speaking ahead of his appearance in the island, Desailly praised the initiative by Guinness to incorporate players, community members and lovers of Guinness into one event.
“Whether you are playing, supporting your community or just coming out to enjoy the entertainment, this is a fantastic initiative of Guinness that has been growing year after year and something I’m so delighted to be involved in,” the Frenchman was quoted as saying.
“I can’t wait to see what the Caribbean has to offer. Come support your team, your community and enjoy Guinness responsibly,” Desailly added.
He will be joined by five-time Guinness world record holder and world-renowned professional football freestyler Daniel Cutting.
Now in its fifth year, the Guinness Street Football Challenge represents a fusion of the passion for football and entertainment at the grassroots level where consumers across the Caribbean are given a chance to show, in true Guinness style, how they are ‘Made of More’.
Over the last few months countries across the Caribbean have seen tremendous bouts of scrimmage-style skill and play as country finalists emerge from the battles between hundreds of teams.
The challenge comes to the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, and will see 10 teams from the Caribbean vie for a chance to play for the pride of their country and to be crowned the Guinness Street Football champion. The 10 teams will represent Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Guyana, St Vincent and
the Grenadines, St Lucia, Dominica, St Kitts, Aruba and newcomers Haiti.
Guinness promises that the event will showcase, over two days, nothing short of a thrilling spectacle of flair and style, reflecting in essence the culture of the Caribbean streets.
