We all grew up hearing the phrase “never wear white after Labour Day”, but how much of us know what that even means? Is it relevant to us as young fashionistas?
It is indeed relevant to us teens, however, the idea of not wearing white after Labour Day has nothing to do with us young Jamaicans, it is just a phrase we have grown to adopt as fashion moguls.
The tradition dates back to early twentieth century America where white was a staple in every fashionistas wardrobe. This was worn especially in the summer as the shade is cooling. It was in fact very effective because air conditioning did not exist at the time.
Labour Day is celebrated in America on September 7th each year, a few months after our May 23rd activities. This September 7th unofficially marks the end of the summer season for fashion and also any reason to wear clothes that are ‘cooling’. Hence the phrase “never wear white after Labour Day”. But as with all rules in fashion, they are never set in stone; legends such as Coco Chanel and many others have ignored this rule by owning and wearing signature white suits all year long.
Us Jamaican fashionistas also disregard this guideline. We wear white before Labour Day, after Labour Day and even on Labour Day. This is justifiable as we experience tropical temperatures all year round, and also because we are simply unique beings. Below are some tips on how to be cool while wearing white this summer. Here is your weekly dose of Rash-on Fashion.
? White clothing can be used to tone down any loud outfit, whether it is a vulgar red polkadot shirt or a lime green skater skirt. Add a dash of white to the ensemble and you are good to go. A white jeggings or blazer will do; allowing you to look calm, cool and collected.
? Never be afraid to wear full white this summer. A full white outfit will definitely make you stand out among your friends, especially if it is your special day. For example, for your upcoming ‘sweet 16’ party, a floor-length white dress will ensure all eyes are on you. A word to the wise however, do not opt to wear white to a barbecue or family cook out, ketchup and barbecue stains on that new white shorts would just be too sad.
? Always add a pop of colour to your all white ensembles. Although it is cool to wear white this summer, we are not June brides so full white does not have to be a constant. Add to that cute white midi dress brightly coloured stilletos, even orange or green if that’s your taste. A colourful statement necklace or purse is also an added bonus.
? Ensure that in your closet there is a pair of white sandals as these are the ‘go to’ shoes for the summer. These can either be expensive or quite cheap. Also it is a plus when you own a pair of white stilettos also. Pointy-toed heels were quite a hit this spring and will surely transcend into summer. A white pair will add both class and sophistication.
It is indeed okay to wear white after labour day as we live in the tropics and it is summer all year round. It is said that purple is the colour of royals but white is the shade that in fact adds elegance, class and that royal flair.
