The ‘Frog’ encounters ‘Danger’ in Contender Series
AN interesting fight package will unfold between Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes and Derick ‘Dangerous’ Richmond in the second stage of the fifth renewal of the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Series at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium tonight.
With a mouthwatering $2 million of almost $3 million dangling before the eyes of the remaining six fighters Holmes and Richmond are expected to challenge for the semi-final accolade.
First bell is at 8:30 pm when the first of two amateur fights will open the three-fight card headlined by the Holmes/Richmond clash scheduled to begin at approximately 9:50 pm.
Talking about the clash, there is also cash and kind giveaways by J Wray & Nephew through its White Overproof Rum brand in segment two of the three-segment entertainment package on offer each night before the main attraction commences.
Tonight’s main attraction was originally listed to take place tonight at slot number three on the roster set for Stage Two fight night. However, due to the injury sustained by Jermaine Bowen, the opponent to meet the number one seed Devon Moncriffe in slot number two, the Holmes/Richmond fight was brought forward.
According to the camps, the boxers are all in good trim and prepared to perform capably on any given night.
Holmes, one of seven fighters in the final eight from Group One, did not really impress in his opening fight. He has, however, reportedly improved satisfactorily since and is expected to be in the heat of battle from the first bell in search of a fair share of the spoils.
Holmes is a young man who has been preparing for this type of opposition and is quite familiar with it, though they have never fought. However, under the instructions of his Team Jamaica coach Carl Grant he has learnt enough to stay clear of the booming right hand of the 25-year-old Guyanese Richmond, who stands at 5’8″ and weighs 160 lbs with a ring record of eight fights, featuring four wins, three losses and a one draw.
Richmond, the only member of Team Caribbean to move on to this round, is also said to be in good shape. And if he can control his anger in the ring during the fight, then it is more than likely he will get the better of Holmes. From Holmes’ previous fights, he has shown that he could take a punch and stand his ground. However, punishment is another matter altogether. So, let us see how well this up-and-coming Jamaican fighter acquits himself against the ‘Dangerous’ Richmond. Holmes, at age 27, stands at 5’8.5″ and has a ring record of 10 fights, withi six wins, and four losses.
