Papa D tops WAVS 1170 Reggae chart
VETERAN Montego Bay roots singer Papa D has scored his first international success when his song, Jamaica Jamaican, surged to the pinnacle of the WAVS 1170 Radio reggae chart in Miami, Florida last week.
The tune, which is also being heavily rotated on local radio stations, moved to the top of the Florida chart after spending two weeks in the number two slot.
“It is a joy. I am glad that the song has taken off internationally, and this will only serve to supply me with more energy to put out more work,” said Papa D, whose given name is Anthony Johnson.
Papa D, who has toured extensively with the Sixth Revelation Band and as a solo act, is still basking in the success of his hit song The 23rd Psalms, which enjoyed the number one position on local charts last year.
Meanwhile, the former cabaret singer, who has received awards for performances in the European circuit, said Jamaica Jamaican and The 23rd Psalms are on his sixth album, titled Guide Me, which also features A Girl Like You.
The well-travelled entertainer said that during his illustrious career he has shared stage at different times with the likes of Jimmy Cliff, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Third World, Inner Circle, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, among other top acts in the industry.
The former cabaret singer said the genesis of his musical career was in the church.
