teenBOSS: Monique McIntosh
“Zola means lump of earth. I chose that name because I wanted something African, that was related to the natural commodities that I produce.” -Monique McIntoshTB: What inspired you to start Zola?MM: I was at a fair while in high school and saw a lady who sold wire crafts. I was inspired by her work and decided to try it for myself. I’m an artistic person and I love to create things with my hands. TB: What exactly do you offer through Zola?MM: I offer unique, hand-made jewellery all made from natural components. I utilize materials like copper, gemstones, leather and brass. TB: What/ Who has been your greatest motivation thus far to help keep you going?MM: My greatest motivation had been my friend Sue Ann Gregg. She is a 21-year-old who owns her own business as a make-up artist, and has been very successful. She has helped and encouraged me in my own ambitions as well. TB: What has been your most amazing experience with Zola? MM: When I got my first newspaper feature. A news editor found my pieces herself and approached me to feature me and I was shocked. That was the first time my work was being published, and by someone I had never even met.TB: What are your long-term goals in life in general?MM: In 10 years I see myself owning my own communications firm, and having my products in boutique beauty stores. Honestly, I just know that I’m going to be successful. I’m trying to not be too anxious about by future and ambitions. I want to allow myself to tackle tasks as they come. I also need to capitalise on the opportunities that come my way. I’m a bit of a control freak so this is a big step for me.
Twenty-year-old Monique McIntosh (MM) has been operating her own business for a little over a year. This is not the full extent of her daily endeavours, however, as the integrated marketing communications major is patiently awaiting her graduation from the University of the West Indies, Mona, later this year. Recently, teenBoss (TB) sat down with McIntosh to gain some insight into her venture.
McIntosh expressed that in time she intends to offer more types of accessories. Her advice for other young entrepreneurs is, “There are no limits on what you can accomplish! There is no box. Forget that idea. Pursue your goals to the end.”
