Montego Bay United look to secure RSPL final berth
DEFENDING champions Montego Bay United will be aiming to consolidate their first-leg two-goal advantage and book a spot into the final of the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) when they host Waterhouse starting at 6:00 pm at the Montego Bay Sports Complex today.
Montego Bay went to Drewsland last Monday and turned in an impressive display in beating Waterhouse 3-1.
The club’s president Orville Powell, who predicted that they would win handsomely at Drewsland, is warning Waterhouse that if they reproduced another physical game, they will be embarrassed in St James.
“We don’t want to embarrass Waterhouse and they need to know that and just relax and come and play football,” said Powell.
“We know the work is not finished as yet and it will be a tough game and I want them to know we will be coming tougher,” he added.
“We knew the first game would be tough but I don’t know if that was football they were playing or what, with that sort of physicality, and we are expecting that again and if they come with that, we will beat them again,” Powell said.
The speedy Allan Ottey, the dangerous Dino Williams and Donovan Carey all netted important goals for Montego Bay, while substitute Andre Leslie gave Waterhouse a glimmer of hope with a late strike.
Anthony Patrick, head coach of Waterhouse, remains optimistic that his team can overturn that two-goal deficit and book their spot in the final.
“We have no other choice but to get rid of that two-goal deficit. I think we have enough quality and depth and hopefully we can turn up tomorrow and play,” said Patrick.
“I keep reminding them of that Harbour View game and to just come out and play and we can get back in the game,” he added. The Harbour View game Patrick was referring to was a 7-2 mauling of the east-Kingston team in March.
Patrick said the vibes in the camp was good after a lengthy meeting with the players on Thursday. “They are very, very comfortable. They are upbeat and raring to go and they are ready to play,” he emphasised.
Last year, the Dr Dean Weatherly-coached St James outfit trampled Waterhouse 5-2 in the final and they must be confident of securing another win. Certainly, they have the psychological advantage but cannot afford to be complacent.
The likes of Williams and Ottey, along with Fabian McCarthy, Jermaine Woozencraft, Lesly St Fleur, Dwayne Ambusley, Greame Green, Ronaldo Rodney, Orlando McBayne, Ladale Richie and towering goalkeeper Jacomena Barrett are too experienced to let a two-goal advantage slip, especially playing at home.
But a closer look at the Waterhouse unit will suggest that the two-legged tie is far from over. They have the deadly Jermaine Anderson with 18 goals to his name, along with Damarley Samuels, Romario Campbell, Tremaine Stewart, Hughan Gray, Evan Taylor, Nicholy Findlayson, Adoah Nickle, Rohan Amos and goalkeeper Richard McCullum, and they are more than capable of getting it right on the day.
It should be another enticing match worth going miles to see.
