Michi Rebranded as Sovereign Centre on the Boulevard
MICHI Super Centre has been rebranded to Sovereign Centre of the Boulevard. It is the third shopping location in Kingston to carry the Sovereign brand.
The shopping centre was first rebranded to Super Shoppers Fair after Barlig Investments Company Limited acquired the location last December. The name change coincides with one of Jamaica’s premier shopping destinations, Sovereign Centre in Liguanea, which is also owned by Barlig Investments.
The Progressive Grocers brand, Super Shoppers Fair banner was mounted over the Michi Super Centre sign last year during the acquisition, a representative from the company reported that the acquisition was still in process. The Centre was previously owned by Earl and Sharon Loshusan.
Located on Washington Boulevard, Kingston, Sovereign Centre on the Boulevard spans over 55,000 square feet and has a car park that accommodates up to 300 vehicles. The shopping centre features various stores of which Progressive Grocers is one of the tenants.
Sovereign Centre on the Boulevard could benefit from the strong brand name and logo image of the well-established Sovereign Centre in Liguanea, which was purchased and developed by the Loshusan brothers in 1993. The brand extended last year to Sovereign East on Barbican Road, with several upscale restaurants at the location.
Loshusan is a member of the Progressive Group, a consortium which operates large supermarkets including Shoppers Fair, Super Value, Sovereign, John R Wong, and Brooklyn supermarkets.
Over the years, the group has been heating up the retail grocery industry, operating some 30 outlets islandwide. Its latest is the establishment of the Progressive Foods supermarket in Portmore, along with three other store developments underway in Ocho Rios, St Ann; Fairview, Montego Bay; and May Pen, Clarendon.
The Portmore development is a project of Vincent Loshusan & Sons Limited, the same entity that owns Sovereign Centre. It is scheduled for opening later this year.
