UTech Knights Tennis Classic launched
THE fourth annual University of Technology (UTech) Knights Tennis Classic was officially launched at a press conference at the Liguanea Club yesterday and will be sponsored for the first time by Carib Cement.
The three-day Carib Cement/UTech Knights Tennis Classic will serve off tomorrow at the Liguanea Club with an exciting match-up of teams from tertiary institutions, high schools and clubs which will compete for top prizes and the championship trophy.
Coach and Tournament Director Llocket McGregor said that the UTech Tennis Classic was introduced to “grow the sport of tennis at the inter-collegiate level”.
He announced that some 55 participants have signed up to participate in the Classic, which is open to schools, clubs and institutions.
Confirmed participants include tennis players from UTech, University of the West Indies, GC Foster College and University College of the Caribbean (UCC). The competition is still open to additional participants.
Registration will begin at 9:00 am each day with competition at 10:00 am. Entry fee is $1,500 for participants and spectators will be admitted free of cost.
McGregor noted that regular ITF rules would apply and emphasised that all teams are expected to be on time for their scheduled matches. The competition comprises two events: men’s and women’s singles.
Laurence Garriques, Acting Director of Sport at UTech, told the gathering of tennis players, students and members of the tennis fraternity that the institution has embraced tennis for a long time and their association with the sport has now started to bear fruit for the school.
“Tennis is sacred to our hearts, and as such we have developed and forged the linkages between high schools and students playing at the college level that has grown into one of the sports UTech is known for,” Garriques said.
Garen Williams, customer relations officer at first-time sponsors Carib Cement Company Limited, said his company welcomed the promotion of tennis at the tertiary level.
“We share a very fruitful relationship with UTech and one that we are immensely proud of. We are anticipating a very exciting tournament that will highlight the aptitude and prowess of the players over the three days of competition,” he said.
