Young designers on show
FOUR up-and-coming fashion designers got the opportunity to showcase their creations at Celebrations on Braemar Avenue in St Andrew, on Thursday night.
The montly show, created by Liquid Gold Modelling Agency’s principal Jaime Rose, is aimed at giving exposure to new talent in the fashion and beauty industry.
“We’re now in our eighth staging… we mostly feature those in college. So, we’ve had students from UTech [University of Technology], Edna Manley [College of the Visual and Performing Arts], and Garmex [HEART Academy],” he told the Jamaica Observer.
According to Rose, he also focuses on other facets of the fashion industry.
“Celebrations also gives exposure to make-up artistes from D’Marie School of Makeup as well as hairstylists. Tonight, we had two hairstylists from HEART School of Cosmetology, which is based in Half-Way-Tree,” he said.
“It’s an event for the whole family,” he continued.
The evening saw Liquid Gold Models rocking the creations of Shanna-Kay Bailey, Khristinea Benjamin, Renee Moodie, and Sasha-Gay Morgan.
Morgan, who graduated from the Marcus Garvey Drive-based Garmex HEART Academy last year, said her collection was called No Equal.
“I used summer as my inspiration. I wanted to be different… thinking outside the box. I want to be a world-renowned fashion designer,” the 21-year-old told the Observer.
Benjamin, 21, also a former Garmex student, labelled her nine-piece set Flower Child.
“This is my passion. This is the only thing I can do. My collection is beachwear,” said Benjamin, who hails from St Ann.
First-year student at Edna Manley College, Moodie’s Get Wet collection saw the use of cool colours.
“My collection was based on nature… summer. I’m happy for the opportunity to show my collection and make my mother proud,” said the 20-year-old Moodie.
Second-year Edna Manley College student, Shanna-Kay Bailey, was excited at her first showing.
“My collection is called Beauty of Nature and it was inspired by a tranquil ocean scene that came as a screen saver on my phone,” said the 20-year-old.
“My classmates recommended the show and I’m happy I came,” she added.
