Planter leaves Osbourne bloodied and bruised in Contender showdown
RICARDO Planter defeated Anthony Osbourne for the first time in three meetings to advance to the next stage of the 2015 Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Boxing Series at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium on Wednesday night.
Doctor Andre McDonald declared Osbourne unfit to continue after the cuts he sustained to both sides of his face were deemed serious enough, forcing referee Eion Jardine to prevent him from taking any further part in the contest.
At the point of stopping the fight, two judges — Clifford Brown and Lindel Iron — scored the bout 29-28, while the other, Peter Richards, scored 29-29 in favour of winner Planter.
Planter, the Team Jamaica contender, while happy with advancing in the tournament, said his season is “still a work in progress”.
“I have seen a number of shortcomings that I will have to continue to work on… and you can expect good things from me,” he said.
Planter said his assault on Osbourne’s face was part of his game plan.
“He (Osbourne) fought two weeks ago and got a cut on the cheekbone, so I knew if I should hit him with a right it will open again, and the first good right hand I caught him with it opened.”
Team Caribbean contender Osbourne was not happy with the manner in which he lost the fight.
“I can beat Planter (as) I have beaten him twice before, but he came prepared to fight with his head. I saw the opening and threw a punch and he just came in with his head. That was unfortunate,” he lamented.
