MBU inch closer to CONCACAF Club Championship
MONTEGO Bay United are a step away from winning for the lucrative Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League after topping Group Three of the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship in Haiti last week and qualifying for the semi-finals set for late May.
Despite the firing of coach Carlos Garcia on the eve of the team’s departure, Montego Bay United won all three games played, including Sunday’s 3-0 beating of SV Excelsior of Suriname at Complexe Sportif de Cayes in Les Cayes, Haiti, to finish with nine points.
Jermaine Woozencroft, Keneile Kirlew and Allan Ottey scored for Montego Bay United, who scored eight goals in their three matches and conceded one. They beat Guadeloupe’s Club Sporting Moulin 1-0 in their first game last Wednesday, then beat Haiti’s America FC 4-1 on Friday.
America took second place with six points after beating Club Sporting Moulin 2-1 Sunday, as the Guadeloupe club was third on three points, while SV Excelsior lost all three games.
Meanwhile, in the semi-finals on May 22, Montego Bay United will meet Group Four winners Don Bosco, who also won all three games played in Port Au Prince.
In the other semi-final, Group One winners Central FC will meet Group Two winners Direct TV W Connection FC.
Both finalists will automatically qualify for the CONCACAF competition along with the winner of the consolation game between the losers of the semi-finals.
