Immaculate, Campion retain titles at Mayberry Swim Championships
Immaculate Conception High and Campion College retained their titles as girls’ and boys’ champions, respectively, of the Mayberry High Schools/Tertiary Swimming Championships as four records fell at the 17th staging of the event at the National Aquatic Centre on Friday.
Immaculate amassed 566.5 points to win ahead of Campion College (403.50), St Andrew High School (347), Holy Childhood (75) and Hillel Academy (54). Campion College tallied 538 points ahead of Wolmer’s Boys’ (375), Jamaica College (272), Hillel Academy (89) and St George’s College (86).
University of the West Indies (UWI) also retained their tertiary title with 344 points ahead of Colbourne College (30).
After an action-packed morning session in sunny conditions, the swimmers returned refuelled in cool overcast conditions for the evening session where they improved on their performances.
The first record came in event 86 where Jonathan Lyn of St George’s College clocked 2:38.27 minutes to win the boys’ 12 and under 200-metre individual medley. Lyn erased the 10-year-old mark of 2:40.27 minutes set in 2005 by Jason Adams as he won ahead of Akeem Alleyne (2:52.68) of Campion College and Rajiv Redhi (3:00.12) of Wolmer’s.
Karci Gibson of St Andrew High stopped the clock at 2:57.62 minutes to win the girls’ 13-14 event just ahead of teammate Lori Sharpe (2:57.69) and Jada Harrison (3:12.26) of Campion College.
Sean-Douglas Gooden of Jamaica College won the boys’ equivalent in 2:58.57 minutes ahead of Jesse Marsh (2:30.21) of Campion College and Alex Mignott (2:42.90) of St George’s College.
The girls’ 15-16 event was won by Immaculate Conception’s Justine Lopez in 3:08.74 minutes ahead of Arianne Leo-Rhynie (3:14.09) of Campion College and McKayla Chin (3:24.83) also of Immaculate.
Bryce Butler of Campion College clocked in at 2:33.81 minutes to win the boys’ equivalent ahead of the Jamaica College pair of Yonatan Goren (2:34.34) and Kymon Naar (2:39.48).
Gabrielle Hopkins of Immaculate Conception won the girls’ 17 and over event in 2:58.84 minutes, followed by Kathleen Pellington (3:30.42) of Ascot High and Asha Atkinson (3:49.58) of Immaculate.
Octavia Gray (2:53.16) of UWI won the girls’ tertiary category ahead of teammate Renee Cooper (3:23.92) and Pricilla Russell (4:48.00) of Colbourne College. The boys’ equivalent was won by Kieran Devaux (2:47.66) of UWI ahead of teammate George-Roy Nalty (3:19.68), while Kevaughn Campbell (2:31.78) of Wolmer’s won the boys’ high school event ahead of teammate Matthew Preston (2:58.73) and Matthew Green (3:51.80) of Ardenne.
Joseph Black splashed the second record of the meet in event 98 when he lowered Sidrell Williams’ old mark of 55.98 seconds set in 2013. Black clocked a fast 54.61 seconds to win the boys’ 15-16 100-metre freestyle ahead of Yonatan Goren (1:02.50) and Shaqueim Cameron (1:03.75) of Wolmer’s.
Brianne Houston of St Andrew High won the girls’ equivalent in 1:13.91 minutes with Arianne Leo-Rhynie (1:14.21) and Breanne Campbell (1:16.79) of Immaculate finishing second and third, respectively.
Jesse Marsh (58.61sec) won the boys’ 13-14 age-group ahead of the St George’s College pair of Jordon Hines (59.13sec) and Alex Mignott (59.72sec), while Angara Sinclair (1:03.90) of Immaculate won the girls’ age-group ahead of Anjuii Barrett (1:03.90) of Campion, and Britny Williams (1:05.22) of Wolmer’s.
The boys’ 17 and over high school event was won by Nicholas Haughton of Campion in a new personal best time of 56.62 seconds, ahead of Kevaughn Campbell (1:00.25) and Jomo Parke (1:04.02) of St Jago. Cheser Adams (1:13.88) of Campion won the girls’ event followed by Ashley Chuck (1:14.09) of St Andrew High and Kimberley Hines (1:14.16) of Immaculate.
It was a clean sweep for University of the West Indies in the girls’ tertiary event headed by Brittany Williams (1:12.51), with Renee Cooper (1:21.25) and Ashley-Rae Walsh (1:26.52) taking the runners-up spots. Justin James (1:02.00) and Samuel Bailey (1:04.00) also made it a one-two finish for UWI in the boys’ event.
Event 106, the boys’ 15-16 50-metre breaststroke brought about another record-breaking performance by Bryce Butler of Campion who stopped the clock in a fast 32.10 seconds to lower the old mark of 32.30 seconds set in 2006 by Brad Hamilton. Butler won ahead of Jonah McClure (34.37sec) of Pre-University and Keith-Jordan Wilkinson (34.58sec) of Campion.
Jamaica College posted the final record of the day when the team of Dante Duett, Adrian Grant, Chester Adams and Jevaun Jackson clocked 2:18.76 minutes to win the boys’ 12 and under 4×50-metre medley relay. They lowered the old mark of 2:19.96 minutes set in 2012 by Campion College as they got the better of Campion (2:22.57) and Wolmer’s (2:31.11).
