Montego Bay United, Jamaica’s lone representative in the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship first round, need only a draw (one point) against SV Excelsior of Suriname to advance to the semi-final stage of the competition when they meet in their Group 3 game at Complexe Sportif de Cayes in Les Caves in Haiti this afternoon.
Montego Bay United beat Haitian club America FC 4-1 on Friday night in their top of the group clash to take over sole leadership with six points while America FC and Club Sporting Moulin of Guadeloupe are on three each. Excelsior are yet to get a point after losing both their matches thus far.
In the first round on Wednesday, Montego Bay United beat Club Sporting Moulin 1-0 while America FC defeated SV Excelsior 4-2.
The winners of the four first round groups will qualify for the semi-final stage set for late May (2015) when the top three teams will advance to the 2015-2016 ScotiaBank CONCACAF Club Championships.
On Friday, Montego Bay United had to wait until late in the first half to get the opening goal. Fabian McCarthy, who had scored in the first game, shot them ahead in the 40th minute to lead 1-0 at half time.
Dino Williams then made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute, but Ken Germain pulled one back for America FC in the 75th minute to cut the deficit in half.
Ronaldo Rodney restored MBU’s two-goal lead in the 79th minute with Dwayne Gordon adding an insurance goal in time added on for the Dr Dean Weatherly coached team.
In the first game of the double header, Club Sportif Moulen rebounded from their loss to MBU with a 3-2 win over SV Excelsior thanks to a double from Louis Jocelyn Senat.
