‘Bus Boy’ goes by Declou in Contender
TEAM Jamaica’s Kevin ‘Bus Boy’ Hylton slipped into the next stage of the fifth renewal of the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Boxing Series with a majority decision over Team Caribbean’s Edmund DeClou, at the Chinese Benevolent Association on Wednesday night.
Hylton scored his sixth career win from 10 fights as vanquished Declou slipped to a third defeat from 19 fights.
Of the three judges, Peter Richards and Lindel Iron scored the bout 58-56 after six complete rounds. Clifford Brown, the third judge, had it even 57-57. It was a result that greatly dissatisfied the large crowd in attendance. Some spectators showed their disapproval by booing following the announcement by the ring announcer Oliver Hardie.
Nonetheless, the victory by Hylton gave Team Jamaica a 4-1 advantage over Team Caribbean after five completed fights in the eight-fight preliminary and elimination stage of the showdown between the teams.
At the end of the contest, Declou, while making his exit, avoided talking to the press .
The victorious Hylton said: “The judges’ decision is final. God works in a mysterious way. I knew I dominated in the first three rounds, but he caught me with some good shots in the fourth and fifth then I came back in the sixth, although he got in a few good shots also. But in the end I have to give thanks to God for the victory,” Hylton added.
Team Jamaica trainer Carl Grant was not available for comment, but Team Caribbean’s Andrew Boland scuffed at the booing by the crowd, suggesting that the judges’ decision was right.
“It is the boxer who throws the most effective punches, and not the boxer who throws the most punches and not connecting who would come out the winner bar any knockdowns in the fight,” Boland pointed out.
