My Kingston – Dulé Hill
What is the most memorable meal you’ve enjoyed in Kingston?
Most definitely the fish at Gloria’s in Port Royal.
What do you most anticipate when visiting Kingston?
I look forward to the ride from the airport. I know I’m going to see my family who are originally from Port Royal.
What would you do if you were mayor of Kingston for a day?
I would make it a holiday.
What’s new with Dulé?
I have a new HBO series coming out some time in June called Ballers that is about the extreme lives of football players. It’s from the producers of Entourage and stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Tell us about the character you play.
I’m the general manager of a football team. I’m a guy with power who is running the show. It’s a nice change of pace for me, because the last few characters I’ve played on TV haven’t been the ones pulling the strings and being in control.
What cologne are you currently splashing?
Yves St Laurent.
What is your beverage of choice?
Either Appleton on the rocks or Scotch.
What was your last major splurge?
I guess it would be my trip here now. I’m turning 40 on May 3, so I’m travelling. I went to Trinidad, I’m now here in Jamaica, I’m going to London ,then I’m going to Italy and The Bahamas — all in the next three weeks. It’s my early birthday present to myself.
You’re turning 40. What do you want to accomplish in the next phase of your life?
I want to keep growing and become the man of God that I’m set out to be. I want to do what God has called me to do. As long as I do that, then I’m good. Obviously I love what I do in terms of acting, so I would want to spread that out to touch people in other ways. I am going to take time to see where the road leads.
What do you consider your best and worst character traits?
My best is that I’m incredibly focused, and the worst is that I’m incredibly, incredibly focused.
Your first brush with recognition came on Broadway with Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk. Any plans to return to the stage?
I was just on Broadway last year. I did a show called After Midnight. It was a musical about the Cotton Club and was arranged by Wynton Marsalis. It starred myself, Fantasia Barrino and a host of amazing dancers and performers.
Of a Tony, Emmy or Oscar, which would you most love to walk to a podium to receive?
The Tony, because that’s foundation. Theatre is the meaning of it all. To be able to be on stage and do it every day, that’s the utmost. But any one of them would be great, I’m not going to be choosy. If they want to give me an Emmy, Oscar or Golden Globe, I will take it.
What’s playing on your iPod or car stereo?
A lot of Machel Montano and Bunji Garlin. I have been running my DJ Private Ryan podcast which has the latest soca carnival mix.
Black is in on American TV with the success of Empire on FOX and black-ish on ABC. What are your thoughts?
Black was always in. I think it’s great that the industry is finally realising what is. We are bankable actors and people love seeing people of colour and in fact, have started to embrace it. I love it, it should have been happening a long time ago, but I’m glad it’s here now.
You’ve been a TV staple for years as a cast member of The West Wing on NBC, Psych on USA and soon Ballers on HBO. What do you watch?
I watch a bunch of stuff: Empire, How To Get Away With Murder, The Following, The Blacklist. At the top of the TV season, I pretty much watch everything, to see what’s new.
What is your philosophy?
Life is hard, so take it easy and enjoy the moments.
