A bag of laughs for Bello & Blakka
LAUGHTER rocked the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston on Easter Monday as comedy duo Winston ‘Bello’ Bell and Owen ‘Blakka’ Ellis celebrated their 30th anniversary with their performance together in 10 years.
There were no signs of ring rust. Bello and Blakka still have the chemistry that has cracked-up audiences since 1985.
The sizeable crowd heard them take on current issues as well as past events. Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller was not spared, neither was the visit of American President Barack Obama to Jamaica.
The government’s hasty clean-up Kingston campaign ahead of the Obama visit was a hit with the crowd.
Their skits — done to reworked versions of Nat King Cole’s Mona Lisa and Dennis Scott’s Uncle Time — touched on homophobia, heterosexual relationships and the ‘gallis’ mentality.
Bello and Blakka — who have been friends since the mid-1970s — delivered individual routines, poking fun at each other.
According to Ellis, there have been requests from promoters to stage similar shows outside of Kingston.
“We have been getting calls from promoters to take the show in the rural areas. Right now we have three shows confirmed for New York in August and one in Barbados,” he said in an interview with the Jamaica Observer.
